We were blessed to visit Crater Lake on 6/28 Wednesday! This lake is the deepest volcanic lake in the world and the deepest lake in the United States. And, it's so cool and beautiful! (photo taken by Dad) Even in the middle of the summer, with daytime temperatures warm enough to wear T-shirts, there is snow!
We're up in the air again! This time, from Beijing to Vancouver (we'll be transferring there)! The wind was big and strong today, but the sky was blue and the clouds were white and puffy. We waited in the plane for a while, because it was not safe to fly in such a strong wind. Meanwhile, we were busy taking pictures! Freckles the bunny on the plane: Anabel: As usual, there was a Safety Booklet that taught you about what to do in the case of an emergency. Also located in the pocket of the seat in front of you was a magazine: Air Canada's magazine. The magazine was mostly about duty-free items for sale, advertisements, and news articles, but there was also a fun puzzle inside! There was also a description of the planes in the Air Canada fleet. The Boeing 737 MAX-8 plane was one of them, too. Finally, after a long period of waiting, our plane took off! In the air... at last! Good-bye, Beijing! I...
It's been a while since I last posted on this blog (last post in 2020)! Time has flown by so quickly. For 2020, 2021, and 2022, our family has been blessed to do a fun summer road trip from CA to the east coast. We've been blessed to visit the OH Scriptorium, dear friends, and fun places along the way. This year, we weren't able to make it to the east coast again, but we are doing a short 1-week trip up to northern CA and Oregon. My family and I were blessed to visit Lava Beds National Monument again! When we visited in 2017, I posted about our visit: http://insummerautumnwinterspring.blogspot.com/2017/07/lava-beds-national-monument.html On Tuesday 6/27/2023, we visited Mushpot cave again and Valentine's cave. Mushpot is a beginner cave with paved paths and lighting inside. Valentine's cave was named for the day it was discovered and has bumpy lava paths, pillars, and sections with low ceilings where you need to duck walk or crawl. Anabel has been so brave and pers...
My favorite part about Science Centers are the interactive displays. The Pacific Science Center had lots of interactive, hands-on displays! We all had a great time at the Science Center. The Well-body Academy of Health and Wellness is an exhibit for kids that teaches you how to take care of your body and stay in good health. There are four areas in the Well-body exhibit: Food and Nutrition, Sleep, Exercise, and Hygiene. At the Food and Nutrition area, we learned to eat healthy foods and the correct amount of Calories. In the Sleep Exhibit, I learned that we need to sleep enough. Exercise is very important for health. Hygiene Let's go upstairs to the WELLBODY LOFT! Exercise well, Eat well, Sleep well, Wash well, and LIVE well! The Age Your Face Display showed you the bad effects of smoking, UV exposure, and obesity on aging. Below is Theodore at the Age Your Face Display: On the left is how Theodore would normally look a...
On Thursday 6/29/2023, we visited Lava Beds National Monument again! We got to explore Hopkin's chocolate cave, Golden Dome cave, and Hercules' leg cave. Enjoy these photos! Outside the caves, there was a sweet butterfly that kept flying around us. Then, it landed on Catherine's helmet and didn't want to leave. I was able to get some beautiful close-up pictures. Here we are outside Golden Dome cave! Dad outside a cave (I think it's a different one from the one above. It's our car in the background, too!) I think this entrance is called the "headache" entrance or something like that. That is because the entrance is so narrow that people sometimes accidentally bump their head on the ledge! Thankfully we are all on the smaller side and we were careful and didn't bump our heads. Caves have three different zones - the entrance zone (lots of sunlight), the twilight zone (a little bit natural light) and the dark zone (no natural light - if you turn the ...
At around 5:30 in the morning on Monday, my Dad came into our room and woke us up. We had everything for the trip prepared the night before, but we hadn't loaded everything into the car. There were also some food in the refrigerator that we needed to bring and many last-minute things we needed to do (like waking up my brother so he could prepare his things). Around 6:00, we left the house. In almost no time, the sun was up. Outside the window, the land was parched and dry, but the view was nice. The six of us were not the only ones traveling. My younger siblings' stuffed animals were also riding on the car. About half-way through the trip, we stopped at a rest station. We had stopped at this rest station before last year when we went on our road trip. There was plenty of space to run around before we went back into the car. Many birds were there, too. My brother had fund taking pictures of the birds and th...
Whenever someone asks me, "What is your favorite place that you visited in Israel?", I always answer, "The Shuk". "Shuk" means "street market" in Hebrew. I love going to the Shuk. The Shuk is always full of life and bustling with people. It is a very exciting place to visit in Jerusalem. There are the most people in the Shuk on Friday morning. This is because the Shuk closes early on Friday because of Shabbat and everyone needs to buy extra food ahead of time. Here is a picture of one of the emptier streets in the Shuk: Almost every type of food is sold in the Shuk: meat, vegetables, fruit, bread, grains, rice, spices, dessert, candy, and packaged food. The most colorful and attractive shops of the Shuk sell candy. We don't buy candy, but it looks very tempting. The smaller candy sells at 3 or 4 for 10 shekels. 1 dollar equals 3.67 shekels, so 10 shekels equals 2.73 dollars. Cookies are also sold at the Shuk. They are mo...
Many, many years ago, on a special day in a special month in a special year, a special, chubby 8-pound baby was born. She had a special name: Grace. This Grace had an older sister who was 18 months old. Then Grace grew and grew. This is Grace when she was 1 years old: When Grace was 18 months old, she had a new baby sister. She was a big sister now. It wasn't so easy being a big sister. Then, she had her 2nd birthday. 6 months after that, a baby brother came along. Grace was 2 and a half years old. Grace loved her baby brother. Grace kept on growing. She was now 3 and a half. This picture was taken at the museum: Then Grace turned 4. Then 5. Grace's older sister would often take Grace and her siblings on adventures. Then Grace turned 6. This birthday was celebrated in Fuzhou, China. Grace was growing so fast! Then Grace turned 7. For this birthday, she had a special chocolate ice cream cake from DQ: ...
On the eighteenth of July, we went to Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. It erupted in 1980. The lava column shot up 15 miles into the air and rushed down the sides of the mountain. All the plants and animals around the volcano were wiped out. After the eruption, life returned quickly. Now, the area is filled with even more animals and plants than before the eruption. However, we didn't get to hike on the mountain itself, because it was closed for research. Mount St. Helens Since we weren't able to go to Mount St. Helens, we went to Johnston Ridge Observatory. There, we could see the mountain and also learn about it from movies, exhibits, or rangers. Johnston Ridge Observatory At the visitor center, we watched two movies about the mountain. They were each about 15-20 minutes long. After the movie, the curtain lifted up and through the window we saw the mountain: Mount ...
Our family LOVES pets! Here, in China, we have and have had many pets. Our Chilean Rose Tarantula was given to my brother by a friend. We aren't sure yet if our tarantula is a male or female, but we think its most likely a female. We feed our tarantula bugs and insects to eat (which my younger brother, my Mom catch) such as katydids, June beetles, butterflies, and more. Our tarantula also spins webs on the ground. In the picture, she is on top of her 'cave'. In the daytime, we cover the tarantula tank with a cloth. Sometimes the tarantula hides in the cave. Once, we tried to feed her a small spider, but she didn't see it and stepped over it. In the video, the tarantula is eating a butterfly that my brother caught. One night, after it rained, we went for a walk. My brother caught this katydid in a puddle. We fed it to the tarantula at the end. When we were walking on the street, we saw these bunn...
